In a significant decision, the Senate of Kenya has voted to uphold the removal from office of Kisii County Deputy Governor Robert Monda through impeachment.

This move comes after a thorough consideration of the charges brought against Deputy Governor Mr Monda, with each senator casting their vote on the four charges levied against him.

The breakdown of the Senate vote on the charges is as follows:

1. Gross violation of the Constitution or any other law: The Senate voted 39 out of 43 in favor of upholding this charge.

2. Abuse of Office: Similarly, 39 out of 43 senators voted in favor of upholding this charge.

3. Gross Misconduct: On this charge, 35 out of 43 senators voted in favor of upholding it.

4. Crimes Under National Law: The Senate vote on this charge saw 32 out of 43 senators in favor of upholding it.

The deputy governor becomes the first one to be impeached under the new constitution.
