Police in Bungoma county are detaining Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa for the alleged murder of his opponent Brian Khaemba’s aide.
The incident involved Barasa and his opponent Brian Khaemba, who was seeking to unseat Barasa from the Kimilili MP seat on a Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket, at the Chebukwabi polling station where they were supposed to witness the counting of votes.
Bungoma DCI Chief Joseph Ondoro said there was an argument between the two, forcing Khaemba to rush into his car.
“Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Mr. Khaemba’s aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where he profusely bled,” read the police report.
The aspiring MP’s driver, one Mr. Joshua Nasokho, is however said to have defied Barasa’s order and started off the vehicle.
That’s when Barasa pulled out a pistol and aimed at Khaemba’s assistant Brian Olunga and shot him at the forehead. Olunga died at the Kimilili Subcounty hospital while receiving emergency treatment.
“He was rushed to Kimilili Sub-County Hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment. Scene visited by the police accompanied by Scenes of Crime Personnel from Bungoma County, where the scene was processed and documented.”
The body of the deceased is still at the said hospital, pending transfer to the Delight Funeral Home.
