Kenyans have been urged to turn out in large numbers in support of paraplegics through the Wings for Life world run.

The run which will take place across the world on the 5th of 2024 will see participants across the world take part in the competition at the same time simultaneously. In Kenya, the run will be held at the newly opened Uhuru Park at 2 pm.

Speaking to the media, Brian Murithii, a spinal cord injury victim, urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and register for the run to be part of ongoing efforts to offer affordable treatment to spinal cord injury victims as well as boost medical research around this area.

‘’if there is a reason why any Kenyan watching and listening to me might want to register and run, let it be not to win but to be part of the solution for spinal cord injury victims not only in the country but across the world.’’ Murithii insisted.

‘’I remember my life before the accident ten years ago, I used to love rugby. I stopped following the sport because I thought my life my done for. Since I started getting myself involved with charity around this area, however, I now feel hopeful that there might be a solution to my condition.’’ he added.

The special race which has in the past been called ‘the last man running’ will see participants from across the world run at the same time. Participants who aren’t able to join physically at Uhuru Park can still run on their own through the Wings for Life World run app on their phones.

Brian further adds that the race has been organised in such a manner that participants can be part of it in whatever manner they see fit. Whoever you are, and wherever you are you can still participate.

‘’I can participate myself and those who will join us will participate either by walking, crawling, or in whatever manner they see fit. There is no set distance to finish; there will be a virtual catcher car which will follow you & once it passes you, your race ends.’’ Murithii summarized the race.

Kenya scooped position 12 in the last edition of the race with Murithii hopeful that the country will improve on this position in the upcoming edition.

Those willing to participate will be required to pay 1,500 Kenyan shillings for registration, which can be done by downloading the Wings for life app. All participants will receive an Adidas-branded t-shirt and a participants’ medial.

All the proceeds of the race will go towards treatment and research of spinal cord injuries.
