Cynthia Wanjiku Mbaire who specializes in 1500m and 3,000 m races in Japan, had suffered since last year before she succumbed a week ago.
However, her body is being detained at a morgue in Tenrei Kaikan with the athletes claiming they have now 15 days to pick it.
According to Coach Victor Wachira, they are required to pay JPY 165,000 which is approximately one point three million Kenyan shillings to clear the bills.
They are calling on well-wishers and the Kenyan government to come in and help in repatriating the body of the young athlete.
Speaking during a meeting at the Nyahururu Stadium, the athletes said they are set to have her buried at her parent’s home in Bagaria, Njoro Nakuru County, but this will depend on whether they will be able to bring her body back home.
His sentiments were echoed by Coach Beatrice Warindi who lamented that it was discouraging to note that athletes are celebrated when they compete and win in international competitions, but it gets tough when they have challenges such as the death of one of their colleagues.
Cynthia Wanjiku Mbaire, who was a member of the Hitachi Women’s Corporate team under coach Satoru Kitamura was best known for her 8:49.72 meet record in the 2019 South Kyushu High School Championships 3000 m at age 16.
She went on to win both the 1500 m and 3000 m at the National High School Championships that year, then won the 1500 m at the 2021 East Japan Corporate Championships, her first season with Hitachi. Her best performance following that was a 9:01.66 for 3000 m in April, 2022.
