Kenya Power has launched a nationwide initiative to update prepaid meters free of charge. The exercise aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of power consumption measurements and address other challenges encountered.

To facilitate the update process, Kenya Power has launched the 'Update Token Meter Yako' media campaign to inform and prepare customers about the update procedure. Customers will receive a reset code and an update code via SMS when purchasing tokens, which they must enter into their meters before loading new tokens.

Speaking during the launch on Wednesday June 12, Kenya Power MD and CEO, Eng (Dr.) Joseph Siror said the exercise will be done globally and it targets all customers using prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specifications (STS) , an international System used for unique identification of tokens in the prepaid meters.

STS is the universal method for transferring tokens to prepaid meters, ensuring security in token generation.

The STS which has been used by over seven million Kenyans has come to an end and customers have to move to a newer system.

“A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens. We have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services,” Siror said.

Customers have until 31st August 2024 to comply with this critical update, which targets all prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).

“We aim to successfully transition our prepaid meters by the end of August this year as well as address other challenges encountered by our prepaid customers,” Joseph Siror, said.

How to Update the Kenya Power Token Meter

Customers will start receiving the updates notification today June 12 from Kenya Power.

They will receive two codes via SMS from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens which will be a reset Code and an update Code. The first code is the reset code, and the second code is the update code.

Furthermore, Kenya Power will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters.

They will enter the codes into the meters starting with the reset code then followed by the update code before loading the newly purchased tokens.

“Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens. They will be required to key the codes to their meter following the steps indicated in the SMS before loading the new token. In other instances, the Company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free.”

The update process will not affect tokens already loaded into the meters. However, customers are advised to use any unspent tokens before proceeding with the update to avoid any potential invalidation.

Customers who will not have updated their prepaid meters within the stipulated deadline will stop receiving their tokens.

“If you would not have updated your token meter by the deadline set by the power company, whenever you attempt to buy a token and load, it will not,” Siror stated.
