KENYA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT WARNS KENYANS AGAINST INCREASED WINDS AND FLOODS
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned about the potential impact of heavy rainfall expected in the next two days. They have highlighted the possibility of gusty winds and flooding in several parts of the country. In a statement released on Tuesday, April 2, the department mentioned that increased wind speeds could accompany the heavy rainfall, posing risks such as roof damage and structural destruction.
Areas expected to be affected by the rainfall include Nairobi, regions surrounding Mt. kenya and areas near Lake Victoria. The forecast predicts rainfall exceeding 30mm in 24 hours in parts of the Lake Victoria basin, the rift valley and the highlands west and east of the rift valley, including Nairobi, on April 2, 2024. The rainfall intensity is expected to escalate to over 40mm in 24 hours on April 3, 2024, spreading to the southeast lowlands, coast and the northern sector.
In addition to gusty winds, kenyans are advised to be cautious about the [possibility of flooding in their areas. They are urged to avoid crossing flooded waters and to refrain from driving or walking through moving water or an open field. Furthermore, residents are cautioned against seeking shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
Government agencies and emergency response teams are urged to stay informed about the weather conditions and to prepare and respond accordingly. According to the Kenya meteorological department, there is a 33%-66% chance of the forecasted weather patterns occurring.
