The Primary International Men's Association Football competition in Africa is the Africa Cup of Nations, often known as AFCON (French: Coupe d'Afrique des Nations) and occasionally as the African Cup of Nations. It was first conducted in 1957 and is authorized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It has been conducted every two years since 1968 and began occurring on odd-numbered years in 2013.
Kenya’s team Harambee Stars has competed in six Africa Cup of Nations competitions but has never advanced past the first round. In 1974, the team participated in its first FIFA World Cup qualifying round. They have never made it to the championship match as of 2022.
The cabinet recently approved the request of Kenya to host AFCON 2027 something that they could not do back in 2017 due to a lack of preparedness.
The goal, according to an official statement from the Presidential office, is to develop a national squad that can compete in the 2030 World Cup. Kenya has never been eligible to play in a World Cup.
"The Council of Ministers noted that the organization of the cup in cooperation will show the power of sports in improving regional cooperation,” the statement said.
The announcement comes shortly after FIFA opted to end the Football Kenya Federation's February suspension.
Kenya declared its intention to submit a joint bid with other East African nations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
