KCSE marking in St. Francis Mang’u Girls halted as examiners protest over low pay and below-par working conditions.

The examiners who are marking Christian Religious Education (CRE) papers claim that the center’s chief examiner implemented harsh policies that severely hampered the examination marking process.

This situation compelled the CS for Education Ministry, Ezekiel Machogu, and the TSC CEO, Nancy Macharia, to intervene to avert the stalemate regarding the CRE P1 examiners.

The teachers complained that they get paid lower than their colleagues. For every CRE paper they get paid Ksh.55 marked while their colleagues get Ksh.78 for every Kiswahili paper that they mark.

The instructors said in recordings viewed by Look UP TV Digital that the sum they were supposed to receive was less than the expenses incurred when traveling to the location and settling.

The St. Francis examiners, who spoke on the poor working condition, also stated that they were overworked because their day began at 5 a.m. and ended at 10 p.m.

They also stated that they were not permitted to bring any electronics, such as phones or laptop computers, into the marking center, making it hard for them to interact during the day.

Teachers taking part in the protest have pledged not to return to work until all of their complaints have been addressed. This will almost certainly cause the KCSE results to be delayed.

Marking of the KCSE examination began on January 2, 2023 with results due on January 23, 2023.
