Kariobangi boxing girls accredited for the Laureus world award

The Kariobangi boxing girl programme has been nominated for the 2023 Laureus Sport for Good Award. 

The Laureus Sport for Good award honors the most inspirational and gaming triumphs of the year, especially those that made positive contributions on the lives of youth through sports.

The top award nominees include the World Cup 2022 champion, Lionel Messi, the famous tennis player, Rafael Nadal of Spain who finished last year at the top list of men’s grand slam championships. Other nominees include the American swimmer Katie Ledecky, the NBA champion for the fourth time in eight years, Steph Curry and the Jamaican 100m sprinter, Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce who won the commonwealth gold medal last year.

Some of the others selected in this category are the team up of Netherlands, Made For More of South Africa that basically focuses on the disabled people and India’s slum soccer. The Kenya’s Boxing Girl programme focuses on young girls from defenseless neighborhoods and poor backgrounds in Nairobi.

This programme was established by Alfred Anato in 2008 famously known as ‘priest ‘amongst the community.The purpose of the programme is to empower young women and enable them to stand up for themselves in relation to its situated environment, Kariobangi, which is one of the toughest neighborhoods in Nairobi.

It began with a number of 19 girls during the 2007-2008 post-election violence and with time it has grown to a total of 1500 girls. The selection happened on Monday night after the list of the shortlisted honored   annual global awards was unleashed by the organizers.
