West Pokot gubernatorial candidate on the UDA ticket Simon Kachapin has been declared the winner after the completion of the counting of votes in the county.

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that Kachapin won the seat with 86,476 votes and defeated outgoing governor John Lonyangapuo who got 84,610 votes.

Lonyangapuo, who has served for one term, was trying to defend his seat on the Kenya Union Party (KUP) ticket.

The outgoing deputy governor Nicholas Atudonyang was also vying for the seat on the KANU ticket.

Kachapin is now taking the helm of West Pokot for the second time after serving in the 2013-2017 term.

The governor-elect lost to Lonyangapuo in the 2017 election. At that time, Kachapin was trying to defend his seat on the Jubilee ticket while Longangapuo was contesting on the KANU ticket.
