Wednesday 9, February 2023, the Karen home of former interior Cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i was raided for unknown reasons.

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and a dozen lawyers came to the former Interior cabinet secretary’s rescue condemning the act.

To prevent their client's detention, Dr Matiangi's attorneys submitted an anticipatory bail application this morning.

The former CS was locked up in his house, according to his attorney Danstan Omari, who spoke to the media at around 10:30 pm on Wednesday.

"I just learned that police have encircled former Interior CS Matiang'i's residence, and I was astonished to learn this at this hour. This country has already experienced late-night arrests and detentions of citizens without cause, which is what we are currently experiencing. This is what is returning to our nation.” Raila Stated

“If Mr. Matiang'i has broken the law, he is a Kenyan and resides there. There is still time to deliver him a summons to appear at a police station.” Concluded.

In a statement seen by Look Up Digital on Wednesday 9 February 2023, Interior cabinet secretary professor Kindiki Kithure distanced the authorities from the raid that happened late at night.

“We have received media reports and inquiries about an alleged invasion of the home of the immediate former Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Dr. Fred

Matiang’i’ by some unidentified persons last night. Dr. Matiangi’s lawyers and some politicians who spoke from the scene alleged that the said persons were police officers sent to arrest the former Cabinet Secretary. This allegation is utterly FALSE. No police officer(s) or any security agent from any Government institution or department was dispatched to the home of Dr. Matiang’i to arrest, harass or otherwise interfere with his Constitutional rights in any manner whatsoever.

I have confirmed with the command of the National Police Service (NPS), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and all law enforcement agencies that none of them has any orders to look for the former Minister.” the statement read in part.

The Interior CS however urged the public with any information regarding the raiding of Fred Matiang’i’s home to file a formal complaint at the nearest police station for investigations and appropriate action.
