Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Trade and Industry, has expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of impeachment cases within the Mount Kenya region.

In a statement released through his platform, Kuria pointed out that the region appears to be gaining notoriety as a hotspot for governor impeachments.

These remarks by the Cabinet Secretary coincide with a concerted effort to impeach Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Kuria noted the historical context, mentioning that during the previous term, Kiambu County from the Mount Kenya region made history by successfully impeaching a governor.

In the current term, Meru County in the same region is on a determined path to potentially become the first county to successfully impeach its governor.

Kuria urged the Mount Kenya region to reconsider this trend, emphasizing that it does not contribute to the region's economic growth or development.

He questioned why it seems to be primarily the Mount Kenya region that is actively pursuing governor impeachments when other regions are more focused on delivering public services.

In a somewhat humorous tone, Kuria quipped, "Unless impeachment has some mysterious connection to the soil, altitude, or climatic conditions of Mount Kenya, it is essential for the region to allow other parts of the country the chance to engage in governor impeachments, promoting inclusivity, diversity, and national unity. Just my two cents."

In the history of devolution, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu holds the distinction of being the first county governor successfully removed from office.

Following him, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also faced impeachment, resulting in his disqualification from running for public office in the 2022 elections.

Currently, Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is facing the possibility of her second impeachment in less than a year, as the County Assembly members remain determined to remove her from office, citing allegations of failed leadership.

It's worth noting that several other governors have faced impeachment attempts, although some have been saved by the intervention of the Senate or the courts.
