On Friday 7th July 2023 Raila Odinga's motorcade was destroyed amid running fights between protestors and anti-riot police.
Odinga had called a demonstration at Kamukunji Grounds to rally his followers in favour of an effort he claims is intended at ousting President William Ruto and his government.
At around 1:00 pm, the former Prime minister together with other Azimio la Umoja party leaders addressed their supporters at the Kamukunji Grounds. Later on, after making a pronouncement and putting forth what he said were the irreducible minimums to the William Ruto-led administration, he slithered through the Thika Road trying to access Nairobi’s CBD.
A heavily armed unit of anti-riot police officers, however, would meet the Odinga-led Azimio convoy with force because they were determined to stop the thousands of demonstrators who were following the opposition leader from entering the city centre.
The city centre was already declared a no-go area for the Saba Saba protests, according to the police.
The rear windows of a number of the opposition leader's convoy vehicles, including his own vehicle, were broken during the melee.
The Azimio leaders were compelled to flee for their lives and make their way to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation facility, where the damage to the cars was examined.
Speaking to journalists, Odinga alleged that a police officer had shot a live bullet into his car with the intention of killing him.
“I survived yet another assassination attempt,” Raila Odinga said.
His statement comes four months after the Azimio la Umoja Leader in March 2023 told journalists his car was shot with live bullets in an attempt to eliminate him during the demonstrations.
