The 93rd edition of the Mashemeji Derby between rivals Gor Mahia and AFC leopards was filled with pomp and colour with the match ending goalless.

As is the tradition of Kenyan football culture, few fans attend the local league matches as compared to how they flock to entertainment joints such as clubs to watch their favourite teams from international leagues.

Recently, however, the love for the local game has gained momentum, more than 15, 000 fans came out and filled Nyayo Stadium in support of the Mashemeji derby.

AFC Leopards gained some financial benefit as compared to previous matches, out of 15, 000 fans who attended, Ingwe managed to sell over 10, 000 tickets. A clear indication that football in Kenya has the potential to grow.

Out of 32 previous encounters, Ingwe has won 27. AFC Leopards, who struggled in the early parts of the season, Ingwe will seek to collect points when they face Vihiga Bullets in early February at the same venue, they currently lie in position eight with 18 points.

On the other hand, 19 times winners Gor Mahia will face 'Simba wa Nairobi', Nairobi City Stars with an aim of reducing the gap between them and leading Nzoia Sugar.
