The 2023 edition of the Red bull doodle art Kenya National finals competition, came to a halt when Henry Otwoma was crowned the winner. He was followed by Joan Muema and Wamuyu Karui who took second and third place respectively.
The red bull doodle is a global competition that aims in empowering the creative talented young generation, to let their mind wander and put their imaginative doodles on paper.
The competitions experienced the participation of campus students and art enthusiasts globally, who fought for a chance to represent Kenya in the upcoming global competition scheduled this May in Amsterdam.
The red bull doodle art national finals were a two-month peak competition which attracted over 8000 artists who showcased their creative doodle designs with only the finalists getting a chance to compete in Amsterdam.
For a chance to participate in the competition, contestants were required to submit an unlimited number of entries to be considered in the selection.
Decorated illustrator and artist Edwin Wainana, one of the competition judges appreciated the high turnout which was 700 pieces that they received. Out of the 700 pieces, only 30 doodle pieces created by 24 artists made it to the gallery for review. However, some artists had more than one piece in the final round.
“Apart from the creativity and skill set, we were also considering the fun aspect. We were focusing on an individual not only who is talented but also who had fun while doodling since doodling shouldn’t be that serious.” Said Ceaser one of the judges of the competition.
The judges selected the top 10 doodle art finalists after going through the entries in a week. The artists include Joan Muema, Caleb Kivindu, Annette Ikok, Henry Otwoma, Marvin Kibutu, Dennis Ndegwa, Brian Amwai, Edward Kamau and Chandni Halai.
Henry Otuoma, a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts graduate from Kenyatta University, thanked Red bull for the opportunity to showcase his talent moreover, grow the doodle space in the country through the competition.
Otuoma will also have a chance to do a doodle piece at the Red Bull Kenya office in addition, to represent Kenya in the global competition in May.
John Muema on the other hand expressed his excitement about being ranked as the first runners-up in the competition. Gift hampers were also subjected to all the winners after the competition.
The final contest will happen from May 25th to 28th in Amsterdam and will feature physical workshops, creative sessions, a public gallery and the announcement of the global winner of red bull doodle art 2023
