The government will not extend the June 30, 2022 deadline imposed on the 47 counties to build the official houses of governors, deputy governors, and assembly speakers, according to Lyn Mengich, head of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
As a result, county officials who missed the deadline will probably be responsible for paying their housing expenses going ahead.
Mengich claims that if the counties do not build the officials' homes by the deadline, they run the possibility of receiving court summonses and audit inquiries.
The June 30, 2022 deadline was first mentioned by SRC on May 20, 2019, when it directed the county secretaries and clerks of the devolved entities to make sure the homes were built by that date.
Taxpayers paid Ksh. 1.49 billion for the rent and housing allowances of the aforementioned officials between March 1, 2013, and June 30, 2022, with Ksh. 560 million going to governors, Ksh. 505.68 million to deputy governors, and Ksh. 420 million to assembly speakers.
Only Homa Bay and Kajiado counties, according to SRC, have built homes for both their governors and deputy governors.
No county should spend more than Ksh.45 million on the construction of a governor's mansion, according to SRC. The ceiling has been set at Ksh. 40 million for deputy governors, and Ksh. 35 million for the construction of speaker homes.
According to SRC, all dwellings must be constructed on county-owned property.
