The Giants of Africa Basketball foundation unveiled three new basketball courts in Nairobi this past weekend.
The foundation that seeks to promote basketball across the continents was on Friday 18, in Divine Word Parish (DIWOPA - Kayole) and Dagoreti High School before opening the third one in Umoja 2 estate in Embakasi.
According to the Co-Founder Masai Ujiri who doubles up as the Vice-Chairman and President of NBA’s Toronto Raptors, the foundation aims to construct over one hundred such facilities in Africa.
The foundation has already completed and unveiled twenty-six of them in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Somalia, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During the unveiling local leaders led by area MP Mark Mwenje and Dan Wanyama lauded Ujiri for helping nature local talent, urging the government to do more in matters of sports development.
The three courts will supplement the already existing GOA courts in Kenya – St. John Primary Catholic School (Korogocho), Samburu Girls Foundation and Sauti Kuu Foundation Sports, Resource and Vocational Training Centre – unveiled during Former US President Barack Obama’s trip to Kenya in 2018
To commemorate the organization's 20th anniversary, the inaugural Giants of Africa Festival will bring over 250 youth from 16 African countries to Kigali, Rwanda in August 2023 for a week-long celebration of basketball, education, culture, and entertainment.
The Foundation is also planning to unveil more basketball courts in the country.
