A Kenya Wildlife officer in Garissa was on Thursday arraigned in court for demanding a bribe of 50,000 in order to facilitate compensation to a victim of a crocodile attack.
According to EACC, the officer, Jimnah Somore Pertet, is said to have demanded a Ksh50,000 bribe from the victim, before he could fill the compensation claim form to facilitate the complainant's compensation for the injuries.
Investigations by EACC confirmed that indeed the officer received the bribe in the sum of Kes.40,000, as part of the demanded amount.
Following concurrence of the DPP, Officers from the EACC North Eastern Regional Office in Garissa arrested the suspect on Wednesday, 17 January 2024 and arraigned him before the Garissa Anti-Corruption Court.
"Jimnah Somere Pertat agreed to receive a financial advantage of Sh50,000 from Issack Hussein Nunow, with intend in consequence, you would fill compensation claim form for persons injured/death caused by wildlife in respect to Duwane Muhumed Kheir," the charge sheet reads in part.
The officer pleaded not guilty to the charges before Garissa Chief Magistrate Stephen Mbunai and was released on a bond of Kes200,000 or cash bail of Kes100,000.
