Former Mathira MP Eliud Matu Dead at 89

Renowned Kenyan politician and former Mathira Member of Parliament Eliud Matu is dead. His family announced that the eighty-nine-year-old died on Wednesday night December 14, 2022.  The former President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta has led in mourning the late entrepreneur and politician. He was Mathira MP for 15 years having served three consecutive terms from 1983 to 1988. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta termed the late as a hardworking and progressive Kenyan. Uhuru said he made a significant contribution to the country’s socioeconomic development.

“To Joyce Gathoni Wamae, the children, and grandchildren, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of grieving and loss. Said Uhuru in a statement.

Born in Kianyingi village in Mathira constituency in 1933 the deceased was a political giant who also served as chairman of the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC).  In his heydays, Wamae was ousted by Davidson Ngibuini Kuguru back in 1987. Davidson Ngibuini Kuguru was his longtime political rival, but the late Eliud Matu reclaimed the seat in 1992.

He wrote the book 'Born to Serve,' in which he recounted Moi's 24-year rule and its impact on the Kikuyu community. The late Wamae truly lived through different eras in Kenyan history. The book also focuses on tracing his heroic journey as a small boy born on the slopes of Mt Kenya to his service to the nation.

Mr.Wamae will be remembered for fighting for the rights of Kenyans and speaking against evils such as corruption
