First Yatta MP Gedion Mutiso dies at 91

The first and longest serving Member of Parliament of Yatta constituency Gedion Mutiso has died at 91.

He died at Nairobi Hospital while receiving treatment for cancer. 

Gedion Munyao Mutiso served in the military as a Corporal but left abruptly due to colonial power at the time. He participated in politics since 1955 and represented Kenya in the Africa Trade Union Confederation.

This was to unite the two parties Kenyan African National Union and Kenya African Democratic Union which lead to the independence of the country.

He was sentenced to prison at the Naivasha Maximum Prison for nine years and six months for an alleged coup in 1971.

He was released in the year 1981 but a year later in 1983 he was re-elected by the people of Yatta as a Member of Parliament and served until 1997.

During his years as an MP, he served as an Assistant Minister in the Ministers of Home Affairs, Education, Health, Agriculture, Lands and Housing.

He was also a Labor Activist fighting for equal employment rights and later commissioned the late Tom Mboya as the Kenya Federation of Laborers Secretary General in the 1960s.

His popular nickname was 'Mutiso wa Yatta'. He fell ill in 2022 receiving treatment for cancer.
