Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga is being sought by detectives from the Nakuru County-based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to a statement released by DCI on Monday evening, May 22, the reformed Mungiki leader is wanted in connection with the recovery of two weapons and more than 90 rolls of marijuana that were discovered in a property connected to him.
The officers who carried out the raid at Ngomongo village in Dundori ward also discovered three rounds of 9mm blank ammo stashed in one of the apartments in addition to arresting 8 suspects, ages 37 to 54.
One of the weapons found was a working handmade handgun, while the other was a Tokarev with a defaced serial number.
“Detectives based in Nakuru County are looking for ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, in relation to the recovery of two firearms and over 90 rolls of bhang, found at a home linked to him.” The DCI Statement read in part.
“Any information on the whereabouts of the ex-Mungiki leader who has since gone into hiding maybe volunteered through the #FichuakwaDCI anonymous hotline 0800 722 203.” The investigative agency statement concluded.
The investigative agency's announcement followed reports of police raids on three of Njenga's homes on May 12 2023 for unexplained reasons.
The former head of the Mungiki sect asserted that a battalion of police officers searched his residences early on May 12, 2023.
The police however denied the links of raiding Njenga’s home.
According to a statement presented by Maina Njenga, between 4 and 6.30 in the morning of May 12, 2023, armed men entered the Ex Mungiki leader’s homes in Lavington and Karen in Nairobi, Ol'Ng'arua, and Nyahururu's Muthaiga in Laikipia County. He however did not provide any evidence of the raid.
