Harry Kane is only one goal shy of passing Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading scorer going into Saturday's pivotal quarterfinal match against world champions France, but the selfless striker would gladly forgo that momentous accomplishment for the chance to help his nation win the World Cup.

In the 3-0 victory over Senegal in the World Cup's round of 16, the 29-year-old scored for the first time this tournament, bringing his career tally for goals for England to 52. With 11 goals, Kane surpassed Gary Lineker as England's all-time leading scorer at major tournaments. England manager Gareth Southgate was relieved to see Kane put any concerns about his form to rest, saying: "Any center forward wants to get off the mark, and of course for him.

Kane already understands the immense value he brings to the squad after scoring six goals during England's journey to the World Cup semifinals, but he also demonstrates maturity and selflessness by playing a role that may result in fewer goals but elevates teammates like Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka.

To keep the channels of communication open for Foden and Saka on the flanks, Kane dropped into areas of space in midfield to find Jude Bellingham, who Southgate noted played a crucial role in the Senegal game. It was Kane's deft pass to Bellingham that allowed the teenager to assist Jordan Henderson for Senegal's first goal.

Although Kane is a relatively quiet player on the field, Saka revealed his captain is not averse to giving a pre-game pep talk to motivate his team. "Harry is a leader. On the pitch he leads by example with his game and he is one of the most vocal in the changing room. Before every game he does a speech to get us all going," Sa said.

This week, Kane apparently displayed his leadership abilities in a more considerate way.
