Four suspects linked to the Embakasi gas explosion, are to remain under police custody for 21 days to give the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sufficient time to finalize their ongoing investigation into the tragic explosion.
The four being detained are Derrick Kimathi, owner of the gas refill plant, as well as Joseph Makau, David Walunya Ong'are, and Marrian Mutete Kioko, who are officials within the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The accused persons will be detained at Embakasi Police Station as the authorities have announced an investigation into charges including murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, negligent acts, causing harm, and abuse of office against them.
They appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday before Nairobi magistrate Dolphina Alego, where detectives filed an application seeking to detain them for 21 days.
This is following directives from President William Ruto, who denounced the incident and urged prompt measures to be taken.
