Thirty-seven-year-old Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge crushed the World Marathon record in Berlin on Sunday 25th of September 2022.

Winning the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:01:09, Kipchoge has now won fifteen of his seventeen career marathons. Kipchoge has reaffirmed his status as the greatest runner in history.  The finish was 30 seconds faster than his previous world record of 2:01:39, set in 2018. This was Kipchoge’s fourth victory in Berlin.

“I am happy with my preparation and I think I was so fast because of the teamwork everything is down to teamwork. ,” Kipchoge said. Only a few of the runners could keep up with Kipchoge in the early stages, along with the group of pacemakers. Having slowed down a little in the second half of the race he still fueled through the final 500-meter sprint. His closest competitor going into the race was Ethiopian Guye Adola. Adola, however, broke down the pace at the fifteen kilometers mark leaving Kipchoge to chase history.

Kipchoge might have not run a marathon under two hours but he has now amounted to Haile Gebresellasie’s record of four Berlin Marathon wins. Kipchoge covered the first 10 kilometers of the race in just 28min 23sec which is less than an hour cranking up beliefs of maybe a sub-two-hour time. “Let us plan for another day. I will celebrate this record and have to realize what happens. Just roll and see what happens.” Kipchoge answered this after being asked whether he would attempt a sub-two-hour run in Berlin next year.

Kipchoge completely shone in the field given that the second person fellow Kenyan Mark Korir, finished the marathon four minutes and 49 seconds behind, with Ethiopian Tadu Abate third. Kipchoge’s focus progressing up is trying to become the first runner ever to win three Olympic marathon titles in Paris in 2024. Kipchoge also wants to win all six annual World Marathon Majors. He’s already marked off four of them. The only lacking is the Boston Marathon which is held annually on Patriot’s day the third Monday of April and the New York City Marathon which will be held on the 6th of November 2022.
