A traffic police officer was on Monday evening killed in an incident involving a motorist while the officer was discharging his duties
The motorist is reported to have grabbed the officer's hand, and drove off with the officer's body hanging for almost 200 meters, before the officer was struck by the same car's rear wheel and killed instantly.
The incident occurred at around 4.30 p.m. on Monday in Mombasa, where the officer was manning Buxton Junction.
The incident occurred when he signaled a saloon car for a routine traffic check with his coworkers.
The driver was then instructed to turn off the engine so that the police could inspect his vehicle.
Police claim that when the driver, Osman Jama Abdi, refused to turn off the engine, the officer attempted to open the driver's door in order to turn off the ignition. The driver allegedly attempted to pull the officer into his car at that point to no avail and opted to hang on him as he sped off for nearly 200 meters, before falling to the ground on the tarmac, leading to the car's rear right wheel stepping on the officer’s head.
The driver fled but was later tracked down in a parking lot basement and arrested.
Coast regional police chief Titus Karuri stated that the incident's motive is being investigated and that his officers were questioning the suspect in order to determine the motive.
The vehicle was later towed to the Makupa police station for further investigation.
