Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has assured parents and learners of his commitment to the implementation of the Dishi na County feeding program.
Sakaja says the program will continue being implemented, amidst the National
Treasury proposal to scrap off the allocation to the national school feeding program in the 2024/2025 financial year budget estimates.
"Nairobi parents and children should not worry. Dishi na County school feeding Program remains on" confirmed the Governor.
The governor further confirmed that his government was committed to enhancing the program, with 200,000 meals being prepared every day, an increase from the previous 180,000 meals that were being prepared last term.
The plan by the national governance to scrap off the school caused uproar among members of the National Assembly since the program is a lifeline, especially for children who come from remote and underprivileged areas of the country.
In Nairobi though, the program is run by Food4Education NGO in partnership with Nairobi County.
"200,000 children are now enlisted and will continue to eat daily" Sakaja reaffirms
The French Government has donated 144M shillings to Food4Education for food subsidy to cushion 25,000 learners who cannot afford the 5 shillings required per child every day to benefit from the food.
Dishi na County program produces close to 200,000 meals per day against an enrollment of 360,000 children which means more than half of the children have access to hot, nutritious meals.
Sakaja confirmed that the county is in the process of constructing an additional 7 kitchens spread across 7 constituencies to cover the remaining school-going children
"Construction of the 7 additional Central Kitchen are at an advanced stage, soon 310,000 children will benefit" Sakaja reiterated
Food for Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that is the implementing partner in charge of the Dishi na County program that also operates in other counties including Muranga and Mombasa
