The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, April 6, revealed four leads as the investigation into Jeff Mwathi's murder narrows down.
In a statement, the agency noted that it was analyzing all the available leads including the CCTV footage obtained from the apartment Mwathi was allegedly murdered before his body was thrown from the building's 12th floor.
Despite Mwathi having been buried the investigations took a different turn after DCI boss Mohammed Amin ordered his officers to conduct thorough investigations which led to the exhumation of Mwathi’s body.
The investigation unit indicated that DNA samples were also obtained from the deceased's body after exhumation to ascertain the sexual abuse allegations.
“Consequently, upon the recommendations of the Homicide experts, the body of the deceased has since been exhumed for a fresh autopsy, and toxicological samples obtained in order to establish whether the deceased had taken alcohol prior to the incident and determine its percentage, or any other toxic substances ingested prior to his death,” read part of the statement.
DCI further detailed that the CCTV footage was undergoing cyber analysis to provide a comprehensive report of the events that occurred on the early morning of February 22, 2023.
Additionally, the Homicide team and Crime Scene experts based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory re-visited the scene, to conduct a scientific scene reconstruction exercise and record fresh statements from witnesses in a bid to unravel the death mystery.
Jeff Mwathi, 23, died on February 22, 2023, under unclear circumstances, his death causing uproar on social media.
The DCI has urged the public and Mwathi’s family to exercise patience as they finalize their investigations in a bid to ensure that justice is served.
