As Campaigns enter homestretch, the vibrant former Law Society of Kenya vice president Caroline Kamende on Wednesday returned her nomination papers for the society’s top job, seeking to take over from incumbent LSK President Eric Theuri whose two-year term comes to an end.
Kamende who served as the Society’s 49th Vice-president under the tenure of Nelson Havi vowed to champion and safeguard the rule of law and constitutionalism and uphold the independence of the judiciary.
The vocal city lawyer who was last year appointed by President William Ruto as a member of the Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule led tribunal that probed the conduct of the embattled four IEBC commissioners famously known as the ‘Cherera Four’, is gunning to break the deadlock that has seen the Law Society’s top job held by men in the last four years.
Speaking to the press at the Society’s main offices along Gitanga road, Kamende promised to champion the interest of members of the bar and remain true to the mandate of the law society of Kenya if she is elected as the President in the elections set for February 22, 2024.
As the Head of State continues with his sustained onslaught on the judiciary, Kamende joined a list of notable members of the bar led by President Eric Theuri and Lawyer Omwanza Ombati in defending the judiciary, noting that the Kenyan bar is the last line of defence for the rule of law, insisting that the president should resort to the established channels to address his concerns and desist from making court decisions items of political contestations.
She will be battling out with current LSK Vice-President Faith Adhiambo in what is shaping up to be a battle of former and sitting female VPs.
Kamende narrowly lost to current President Eric Theuri two years ago in a hotly contested battle as she now seeks to take over the reins of power for the next two years
