Residents and bystanders at Mumias East Market Kakamega county were shocked after a dead woman "declined" to be taken to her in-laws for burial due to a disagreement over unpaid dowry.
The deceased 19-year-old Mildred Makokha, had been taken by the two families from the mortuary at St. Mary's Mumias hospital
Abel Katima had accompanied them in the hearse said that he had told the driver to hoot when they got near the home to alert the family but abruptly, the car started sputtering and came to an abrupt halt.
“I instructed the driver to honk as we got near the home to inform the deceased's family that we were now headed to the burial place. Then the car stopped.” He stated.
The mourners made several attempts to jump-start the car, but they were all in vain. They called a mechanic but the car could not start.
The village elders had to be called to intervene and noted that everything was happening because of the deceased's discontentment over the unpaid dowry.
The elders then proceeded to “talk to the deceased” in order to accept to be buried a tradition that happens in the Western parts of Kenya.
The body was later transferred to a pick-up before heading home where the 19-year-old who had passed on following complications from her pregnancy was laid to rest.
