All Set for 2023 Windsor Golf Classic
The annual Windsor Golf Classic, the second round of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship, has been launched today at the Windsor Golf Hotel and country club in Nairobi. The second round of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship is set to feature over 100 players who will represent the country at the Magical Kenya Open on 9th March at Muthaiga Golf Club.
The opening round is scheduled on Friday where seven ladies, 22 pros and 90 amateurs across the country have successfully registered bringing a total of 126 participants. This season is quite special since they are playing along with professionals under the Kenya Golf Union and the Professional Golfers Association of Kenya. The pros will be battling with the amateurs for the first time in this second series of the second Amateur Golf Championship 2023.
The pros and the amateurs will have a cash prize at stake after a rule change by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A).
“We have a full field and a lot of work and also very excited. We are expecting at the end of the competition to see the level of golf in our country and also give a challenge to our elite amateur golfers because they are playing with the professionals and also battling for the cash prize. "said Greg Gathumbi, the vice-captain.
The magical Kenya Open scheduled at the Muthaiga Golf Club includes a total of 8 pros and six amateurs that will represent Kenya. The amateur team includes captain Dennis Maara (Limuru Country Club), John Lejirma (Railway Golf Club), Jay Sandhu (Royal Nairobi Golf Club) and Abel Balala (Nyali Golf Club).
The ladies will also be involved in the second amateur golf classics for the first time. They include; Naomi Wafula (Vipingo ridge), Joyce Wanjiru (Kiambu golf club) and Channelle Wangari (Vet Lab Sports Club).
“After the Kenya Open they don’t have much to play for until the Safari Tours starts and they saw it and I see it as a very good opportunity to start or practice early before their main tournament starts,” said David Kihara, the rules and tournament official Kenya Golf Union.
The Windsor Golf Classic takes off on Thursday 3rd of march 2023 following a finale on Sunday 5th of march 2023.
