Traders in Kisumu Arrested Over Possession Of Plastic Bags

Through a gazette notification published on February 27, 2017, the Ministry of the Environment prohibited the use of plastic carrier bags.

But judging by the number of persons who have acted in opposition, it appears that the order was ignored.

Eight vendors were detained in Ahero Kisumu during its most recent rounds after they were discovered in possession of 16,000 pieces of prohibited plastic bags.

“To maintain a clean and safe environment across the entire country, the Authority will keep up its enforcement of the restriction,” according to NEMA.

A fine of between Sh2 million and Sh4 million, a jail sentence of between one and two years, or both could be imposed on anyone discovered in possession of a prohibited plastic bag.

The traders in Ahero are expected to appear in court to explain their charges.
