A junior police officer brutally murdered two women in a police camp in Langata, Nairobi, before shooting himself.
According to authorities, Corporal Mark Mulanda of Langata police station killed his girlfriend after killing his colleague’s wife.
The deceased women were identified as Fiona Chepkoech, 37, wife to the deceased’s colleague and Rhoda Machuma Chepchumba, 28, who was his (Mulanda) girlfriend.
Mulanda shot Fiona twice, according to police who arrived at the scene on March 5 at Mugumoini camp. Rhoda had seven rounds. Fiona, a neighbor of the couple, was supposedly fired after she came out of her house to intervene in Mulanda's residence. "This was after she heard a commotion from the house," police said.
Fiona's husband had traveled out of town to attend the funeral of a colleague. As he returned home, he discovered the horror.
Mulanda had been assigned night duty in the region before excusing himself, claiming he needed to pick up a jacket from his house. He had earlier on been heard talking to his girlfriend on the phone.
It was reported that the police officers who arrived on the site discovered that the officer was fully dressed in his police gear, had a pocket phone, and his AK-47 was loaded with 20 bullets.
Mulanda, according to police, had a vendetta and plotted the murder and suicide.
According to forensics, the cop died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot that entered his neck from the front and exited from the rear, according to officers who went to the scene.
His coworkers reported that he had recently appeared distressed.
Monica Kimani, the Langata sub-county police commander who visited the location, stated that they have yet to determine the cause of the tragedy.
The three bodies were taken to the municipal morgue while further investigations were conducted.
The tragedy could be associated with a spike in suicides inside the service, which has been linked to trauma.
According to officials, trauma is the primary cause of such behavior.
