Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reveals that at least 80,000 households nationwide have been affected by the ongoing El Nino rains.
During a church service in Bungoma county, Gachagua stated that the ongoing heavy rains have significantly affected over thirty counties.
Among the most affected are Mombasa, Garissa, Tana River, Makueni, Marsabit, Kilifi, Kwale, Meru, Isiolo, Turkana, Samburu, Wajir, Homa Bay, and Busia.
In his speech, he assured that the Government is actively working to ensure that affected families receive humanitarian aid, including food and non-food items, and medical supplies.
“Government helicopters are on joint rescue missions of marooned families, distribution of humanitarian aid- foods and non-food items, medical supplies, among others,” Gachagua stated.
To enhance ground response to the affected counties, the Government is also allocating funds for the repair of damaged infrastructure.
In addition, the Deputy President urged Kenyans residing in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds, emphasizing that the Government is strengthening response mechanisms to alleviate the adverse effects of El Niño.
