The 48-year-old Man who was charged with blindfolding and defiling his 12-year-old daughter in Lamu has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Lamu court.

John Mureu Bonea is said to have committed both offences multiple times between 2020 and 26 August 2022 in Ndeu village in Lamu County.

The cases of biological fathers involving their minor daughters in intercourse is increasing especially in Lamu County.

A new report by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) shows defilement cases are on the rise in the country. The report shows a total of 11,366 sexual offence suits were filed in court, with defilement accounting for 6,467.

The accused, John Mureu Bonea appeared in court before Magistrate Hon. Martin Wachira who noted that with the evidence provided and the prosecution's arguments, the accused stands guilty of the charges.

The prosecution had an easy time as it presented five witnesses to help the court decide on the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

Following the heinous act done by her father, the magistrate noted that the child must have suffered a series of mental and psychological disorders for the past few years.

John and his wife had been separated for quite a while and left the daughter in the care of her grandmother who would sometimes send her to her father's house to collect foodstuff.

Unfortunately, the grandmother passed away, and the victim had to be taken care of by an aunt.

In a moment of vulnerability, the victim broke down. She confided in her aunt, revealing the unspeakable horrors she had endured at the hands of her father for years.

The aunt took her to the Mpeketoni sub-county children's office, which referred the matter to the area police. The case was then transferred to the Hindi police station, where the incident had occurred.
