Parents, caregivers and needy learners who have been struggling and wallowing in abject poverty as a result of hunger and insecurity in West Pokot County. Can now breathe a sigh of relief after the County Government launched a bursary kitty worth Ksh 435 million.
Speaking during the launch at Ortum Boys high school on Saturday, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin pointed out that his administration has prioritized and put emphasis on matters of education to help reduce illiteracy levels and empower the people of West Pokot.
The County boss called on school heads to make prudent use of the funds to benefit deserving students.
"Do not send our children home. We have given you enough bursaries to supplement what the national government provides. "You have no reason to chase our students," Mr Kachapin stated.
West Pokot County Executive member for Education Rebecca Kide affirmed to school heads that money allocated for bursary is ready and the issue of bouncing cheques will be a thing of the past.
She lauded the bursary committee for burning midnight oil to ensure the function comes to fruition.
“We have given out bursaries to all learners from West Pokot learn in schools in many Counties. No child has been left. We did not put politics nor discrimination .The Governor in his manifesto prioritized bursary,” said Ms Kide.
Deputy Governor Robert Komolle assured residents of West Pokot of a fair share of education to their children.
He advised the beneficiaries of the bursaries to take advantage of the program to prosper by advancing to greater heights.
“We want the beneficiaries to work hard so that they can uplift the economy of the region in future, adding to the county,” said Mr Komolle.
He said the program was an icing sugar on the cake for the bright but needy students whose future appeared bleak initially but smiles were painted on their faces with the good news.
