At least 4000 students, who were chosen to enrol in Form One in the north Eastern region, have not reported for admission.

According to data provided by Aden Roble, the Regional Director for Education in the northeastern region, out of the 26,926 students selected for secondary school enrollment in the area, only 22,462 students have commenced their first term.

The most affected county is Garissa, where only 6,491 out of the 10,120 students designated for secondary school enrollment have registered, leaving more than 4,000 students who are still to report.

Wajir County has only 99 students awaiting admission to Form One, while in Mandera, 13 students have enrolled in vocational colleges, with 168 students yet to join Form One.

The transition from primary to junior secondary school in the region stands at 83.4 per cent, with Mandera leading at 99.5 per cent, Wajir at 90 per cent, and Garissa trailing behind at only 64 per cent.

In light of this information, North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno has called upon authorities in the region to address the situation and ensure that the students promptly report to school.

“We are going to launch a mop-up exercise to make sure that the students or the pupils who are still at home go to school. We cannot have a situation where over 40 per cent of those who are supposed to be in school are still at home,” John Otieno said.

“The government has released the capitation for all students to the schools so we do not want to hear any stories of certain levies being demanded by their respected schools that deter children from going to school,” he added.

The northeastern Regional Director for Education Aden Roble has also called upon parents in the region to allow the students to go back to school
