22-year-old Kidnaps Self Demands 20,000 in Migori

A 22-year-old from Kamunda Secondary School in Awendo Migori County was detained for kidnapping himself and requesting Ksh20,000 in ransom from his mother.

Joseph Odhiambo texted his mother multiple times on Friday, January 5, claiming to have been abducted by unknown people. He demanded a ransom of Ksh20,000.

After he failed to get home on Thursday, January 5, his mother filed a report with the police on Friday, January 6.

He made a quick distress call shortly after saying goodnight to his mother and heading to his room at around 9:00 p.m.

The police chief in Awendo, Mathias Pombo, claimed that when the boy's mother went to his house, she only discovered a blood-soaked vest.

However, after his mother failed to submit the requested ransom on Monday, January 9, the student returned home wearing bloody clothes.

The mother later frogmarched the form four student to Awendo police station where he admitted stage managing his abduction.

Cases of teenagers faking abduction and asking money from their parents have been on the rise recently police officers arrested a form three student Saturday, in Meru county, for faking his kidnappings to extort money from his parents.
